Under direction of the Agriculture Program Supervisor I, the incumbent is responsible for planning, organizing, directing, and coordinating the activities of the Rearing and Release departments of the Mediterranean Fruit Fly Preventive Release Program (PRP). The Rearing and Release departments are responsible for receiving, incubating and delivering approximately 7 billion sterile medflies per year. These flies are produced at the Los Alamitos field station and delivered to contracted aircraft for daily releases across the Los Angeles basin and emergency ground or aerial releases statewide as needed. This activity requires clear and precise communication with California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) and U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) staff, aircraft pilots and ground crew, air traffic control, and military personnel at the Joint Forces Training Base where operations are staged. The incumbent performs technical activities for the daily operations of PRP, including Supervisory responsibility for the Rearing and Release department work force of seasonal and permanent employees and implementation of emergency sterile fruit fly release projects.

The duties of this position are primarily indoors. The incumbent works in an open office space that is in close range to work stations of the other support staff. The office is equipped with a radio communication system, telephone, and a computer with various desktop applications. A printer is located within the immediate workstation area. The office is also equipped with an adjustable roller chair, file bins, cabinets, and various desktops of standard height. May work outdoors when assisting PRP operations.
The incumbent is required to drive and must have a safe driving record as documented by the Department of Motor Vehicles. (A safe driving record is one free from convictions in the past two years for repeated moving violations or a single serious violation such as, but not limited to, drunk driving or reckless driving). Incumbents must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted during the course of the work; work well under pressure; make appropriate decisions and well thought-out recommendations; work independently in completing assigned work and meeting required deadlines.
Travel by State vehicle or other public transportation systems to various locations throughout the State is occasionally required to assist various emergency projects as needed; overnight travel is occasionally required.
Telework will not be an option for this position.
